The subject of living room furniture placement is of utmost importance because of many reasons. I am going to discuss some of the most important points about furniture placement in a living room.
First it is necessary to make a note that a living room in any home plan is the first room of the any house. In most cases it is the first room where any person enters and then travels to other rooms such as bedrooms, dining room, kitchen, kid’s bedrooms etc.
This makes the placement of living room furniture very crucial. Because the entrances to all other rooms are through living room it becomes necessary to carefully examine the movement patters from the entrance to other rooms.
The furniture must carefully be placed in such a way that there is enough circulation space available without any destructions. Not only enough circulation space but the shortest route from the entrance to other rooms is also advisable.
Any standard living room will have common set of furniture items such as
1) Sofa sets
2) TV unit
3) Storage or shelves for books/other items
4) Coffee tables
5) Accessories such as picture frames/statues etc.
It is necessary to come up with a unique and functional furniture placement plan. While placing the TV unit it must be taken into consideration that the TV screen does not receive glare because of direct sunlight falling on it.
This can cause poor picture quality.
Also sofa sets must be placed in groups so that a habitable space is formed where the whole family can sit and enjoy. Normally sofas are arranged around the TV unit or the fireplace (if you have one).
Thus the living room furniture placement can greatly affect the functionality of a living room design and its interior design outcome. Learn more about living room design.

A living room is the first room when anyone enters the home. Due to this it is quite obvious that a living room interior design must be the “signature” of the entire decorating and design theme for the rest of the house.
I have very rarely seen different themes in all rooms of the home. if you prefer a interior design theme with heavy decoration and ornamental qualities then an “oriental interior design theme” is best suited for your home. Whatever theme you choose for the interior design of the living room, you will have to carry it to all other rooms simply to maintain a visual balance and connectivity.
It is quite important to note that a living room in a home is the focal point of the home. Entrances to all other rooms go through the living room. This is especially true with small apartment units where space is a scarcity. This makes the status of a living room very important from interior design point of view.
That is why deciding theme of the living room interior design will greatly affect the final outcome of your entire home picture. Another important point to be noted is that it’s your home and only you can tell what is best for you and what are your likes and dislikes.
While deciding interior design ideas for living room always have a look at your special interests. For example some people like traveling and have a collections of lots of books/photos/antique pieces/collectibles, which they have collected from, all over the world. You can use this as a decorating theme for your living room so that your living room interior design reflects “who you are” and your special interests.
It’s no point copying designs of some other person and calling it your own. It is good to take inspiration from others but always have your own design touch while decorating your own home and specifically your living room.

Before we go into the details of apartment living room design, let’s first have a look at what exactly is an “apartment”. An apartment is a building type where more than one housing unit has been arranged in such a way that all the units get a benefit of all the building services equally.
For example all the housing units share a staircase block, lifts, overhead and underground water tank. This saves the cost of construction and the biggest advantage is saving in land area, which is scarce now days in big cities. That is why you find more apartment blocks in big metro cities. The main purpose behind designing and constructing an apartment is to get same or equivalent comfort levels of an independent bungalow in leas space and money.
But apartments do have certain disadvantages too. The most common disadvantage is smaller rooms. This may not be the case in all apartment blocks but a majority of them do have smaller rooms. While designing interior design for apartment living rooms this pint must be taken into consideration.
Smaller living rooms require a bright color scheme so that the natural light gets deflected into deeper areas and it gives a perception of more space. Also the furniture arrangement and their choice play a vital role in apartment living room design.
It is better to avoid bulky furniture in smaller living rooms. This is because bulky furniture gives a perception of more volume thus creating a perception of more space occupancy. In a smaller living room this can create a impression of crowdedness. Furniture with thin frames and smaller volumes serves best for smaller living rooms. Avoid using dark colors on apartment living rooms. Also other furniture such as TV units or bookshelves can be designed to reveal more of wall areas behind so that the overall visual volume gets easily perceived giving an impression of more space.
The whole interior design style must reflect a kind of openness and inviting nature. Thus apartment living room design is a fun activity and many experiments can be done creatively to create a unique design style.

Living room in any home is the most important space as far as interior design is concerned. The reason behind this is simple. It is the first room (in most cases) in which any person enters. Living room design will create the first impression of your home in the visitor’s mind.
When it comes to designing a living room interior space, furniture plays a major role. If you carefully examine the position of your living room in a home plan you will notice that all other major rooms such as bedrooms, family rooms, kitchen, dining room are connected to the living room via a passage or a lobby.
This makes the furniture arrangement of a living room very important. If the architect has taken enough care about the circulation spaces then it becomes easier to create a clear circulation area fro living room to other rooms after the furniture has been arranged.
A typical living room will have the following furniture pieces.
1) Three seat sofa
2) Two single chairs
3) Coffee tables
4) Side tables
5) TV Unit with storage
Depending upon the size and shape of the living room these items may change. The furniture items you choose for a living room must reflect a design theme that goes well with the color scheme as well. In most cases the color scheme has been painted the house gets occupied y the owner. That is why if you are low on budget, a furniture design theme that matches the color scheme of the living room will serve the purpose.
Here is a simple living room furniture idea. If your living room area is small, go for furniture, which is not bulky in volume. A kind of furniture, which is made up of steel members, reveals more of wall areas behind, giving an impression of more space. Such kind of steel furniture is light in weight and it is easy to alter the furniture arrangement of you are not happy with the visual balance after a few days. You can try out all sorts of experiments with lightweight steel furniture.

Almost every home has a living room. This is the room where your home begins. A living room is responsible for defining the identity of your home. It is the face of your home. All those who visit your home (except family members) never really enter your other rooms, but they will definitely visit your living room because it’s the first room.
While designing a living room it is advisable to pick a design them and follow it. The name “contemporary” is the name of the design theme which a few designers follow to design any room of the home.
In this design theme major emphasis is given on simplicity. Straight lines and simple curves dominate various forms. Heavy decoration is strictly avoided. The real thinking behind this design theme is that simple geometrical forms such as square, rectangle, and circle are they so beautiful, why decorate them further and disturb their visual balance.
That is why contemporary living room design may include a dominance of straight lines in various elements such as flooring patters, furniture, wall finishes, light fixtures, etc. Any heavy decoration, which may include floral prints, plants, and relief work on walls, is strictly avoided. Color schemes are mostly plain with contrasting or even sometimes making a bold statement. Simplicity is the key when it comes to contemporary living room design theme. Because of the more percentage of plain surfaces in contemporary theme, a good use of natural or artificial lighting can be done to add extra visual attention.

If you are planning to design or even redesign a living room then here is a quick tip that can save lot of time and money. Before you go out and buy stuff for decorating your living room design first decide a “design theme” for your task.
A theme is nothing but a way of looking towards the design. Some of the popular living room design these are
1) Contemporary design theme
2) Country design theme
3) Oriental design theme
Once you are very clear about the design them it becomes mush more easily to choose specific items that will form a part of the final design. For example if you have planned hanging curtains along living room windows, depending upon which “design them” you have opted for, you can easily shortlist a few designs and finalize them by looking at the budget and color scheme.
But the choice becomes mush more difficult if you are not sure about the theme itself. Thus living room (or any other room) design ideas will flow naturally if you break down every aspect into a theme and work on it.

Not everyone has an unlimited budget when it comes to decorating his, or her living room, thus affordable living room decorating is an important thing to think about. Many people’s living rooms are a direct reflection of their financial difficulties, often comprised of hand me downs, and thrift furniture. Not only is this not a great design element, it is completely unavoidable if one has a grander vision.
Embrace the shabby chic design element that allows for vintage to be cool. Some of the most respected furniture design companies spend much of their budget creating vintage looking furniture. When considering affordable living room decorating it is necessary to look at this trend, and embrace it while going for the originals.
Instead of going to the thrift shop, try looking at an antique auction or antique store instead. Many think that the word antique signifies a high price tag, when in fact most antiques are as cheap as what a piece of furniture would be at a thrift store. Just as the retail market has general rates, so does the resale market. This means that a beautiful antique sofa or table at an antique is probably as cheap, as a dirty couch found at a thrift store. By looking for antiques you can find not only beautiful affordable living room decorating pieces, but you can also find sets easier.
Create a must have list, and start at the top when putting an affordable living room decorating plan in action. There should be one or two pieces that are the focal points of your affordable living room decorating effort, and thus try to obtain those first, and build around them. By considering this in your affordable living room decorating plan, you will be automatically thinking about an actual design, what most people forget to do when they shop for affordable furniture. Stop thinking in terms of price, and instead think in terms of design, and then in terms of price.
Go with a simple, minimalist look to save money. While minimalists come from all economic walks of life, it is the most affordable way to make an affordable living room decorating plan look chic. Simply define your needs in terms of people that will be spending time in your living room, and go off to find the minimum that they need. Space the furniture, and tables out, and you should have an affordable living room design that the entire family will appreciate.

Living room in every home generally has the largest volume. The simple reason behind this is a living room is considered as a “gateway” to all other internal spaces. But in case of an apartment block in crowded city, scarcity of space is an issue resulting in compact architectural planning.
This gives rise to apartments with bare minimum spaces.Whatever be the case we can make minor changes to internal design and presentation to create a look and feel of a bigger living room. There is one very important thumb rule when it comes to playing with internal spaces. The more light you will allow to enter a room, the more it will be perceived as a big room as far as volume is concerned. Also if you use brighter color shades that will help a uniform and smooth reflection of light equally in all the corners of the living room, it will be easier and effortless transition from small to big room perception.
There are certain points we can consider here.
1) Avoid using heavy furniture such as big stuff sofas, wardrobes or bookshelves that have closed shutters. Instead if you use sofas with sleek frame (like the one in bamboo furniture) this will create more transparency and will help in perception of more space. Also storage units such as TV unit, book shelves if kept open will reveal more wall surface behind them and reduce the “bulky” look.
In an interior space that is empty the perception of “small or big” is usually decided depending upon the dimensions of the space. The volume of the space defined by the boundaries of walls, floor and ceiling defines the space. The openings in the walls further help in reducing the bulkiness of the space. Next when the furniture fits in its place the importance or influence of the walls reduces and all attention gets focused on the furniture facades.
That’s why it is necessary to use sleek furniture in smaller rooms, that will help in revealing the true nature of a space.
2) Allow more light to enter the living room by using light curtains. Instead of using heavy looking “valances” use simple and if possible semi transparent curtains that are just enough to reduce glare that might be caused because of direct sunlight.
3) Use brighter color schemes commonly known as “hot” color schemes. These create a very good transmission and reflection of natural as well as artificial light inside the living room.
There is one more different approach to defining the perception of the living room (or any interior space) and that’s the empty volume left behind after all the furniture and other accessories have been fitted. Because anything in our living world is always “relative”
The perceived volume is always relative to the empty volume that is normally used for circulation. The more empty volume you get, the bigger the room will look.
This also applies with transmission of light in all the spaces. The more you can get inside the room better it is for the healthy habitat inside the living room.
I hope this article was informative and will help you understand the concept of smaller and bigger perception of internal spaces.

A typical home plan consists of various kinds of spaces categorized as per their primary function. A living room is amongst the most important spaces in any home. It is a room with maximum area in plan.
In spite of variations in shape, size and volume of living rooms depending upon design of each, one thing is common for all kinds of living rooms and that’s their need to have an inviting nature.
This kind of inviting nature can be achieved by using some easy design principles such as use of bright colors. If lighting is used with these colors then a very magical play of colors can be used enhance the living room space.
Lighting primarily is categorized in two types
1) Natural lighting (Direct sunlight) and 2) Artificial lighting.
1) Natural Direct Sunlight.
Natural light received from the Sun is the most obvious and healthy source of light we receive during daytime. Though the intensity and quantity of sunlight coming inside the space can be controlled using diffused glasses or curtains on windows.
When the direct sunlight falls on the inside walls the color of the walls temporarily changes to a mixture of sunlight plus the original wall shade. This particular phenomenon can be use to our advantage. By finding out the wall that received direct sunlight and painting
that wall with bright color a beautiful diffused and “reflected light” can be created absolutely free. This “reflected light” will help in creating an ambience in the living room.
Also shadow patterns on this wall will add to some extra excitement if used creatively.
2) Artificial Lighting.
Artificial lighting is a wide area of study of interior designers. Unlike sunlight in this type of lighting every aspect of light, right from its color to it’s intensity or even it’s area of spreading can be controlled with various controls.
Also depending upon the requirement of the living room space a single or multiple number of lights of various intensities can be used.
But for creating a “moody” environment lights are used in specific areas of the living room such as ceiling corners or along the edge of the room. In creating a mood it is necessary to hide the light source and only show its effect. By hiding the light source using a “false
ceiling” and projecting the light on bright colored ceiling panels such kind of mood can be created.
In some cases spot lights are also used to bring attention to specific areas of the living room such as the loop created by sofa sets around the TV unit. Corner end tables that come with a living room set are good for creating a platform for decorative lampshades that will lit the entire sofa set area for some extra lighting.
There are numerous more ideas and methods you can use to add some extra attention in the living room. I am sure this article will help you to generate more creative ideas of your own to decorative a wonderful living room.

A table is a furniture unit which is seen in every home used for a variety of purposes from study to dining, tables are a very popular type of furniture unit. Theoretically speaking a table is nothing but a horizontal platform with legs that support various activities in everyday work.
Since the primary function of a table can not be defined with 100% guarantee the form and shape/size of tables greatly vary. For example tables for studying/dining/coffee/in restaurants/in bedrooms/in living rooms all have different sizes.
In living rooms two types of tables are primarily used. First are the end tables that come with a living room furniture set as part of the other furniture units like sofas and chairs and the second type is a coffee table. As the name suggests a coffee table is normally placed in the center of the “loop” formed by sofas and is used to serve eatables or drinks etc. because of this the overall volume of the coffee table is short and does not “over occupy” the living room.
On the other hand end tables are only used as fillers to occupy the small corners at the “end” of sofa units where living room ends. These kind of tables are also mostly used to keep a flowering arrangement or statues that will hide the unwanted corners of the room. The typical height of both end and coffee tables measures to be 450 mm (1 feet 6 inches approx.) This height does not obstruct the vision of the people occupying the living room.
The coffee table normally comes in a two layer design. The upper layer is used to serve coffee or other eatables and the lower layer can be used to keep magazines/newspapers.
One very creative way to break the old pattern of decorating is to use the end tables as a coffee table but in more numbers. For example instead of using a single rectangular coffee table with glass top you can use two wooden end tables and two glass+steel end tables to create an interesting pattern. Since the end tables measure shorter in demission around 450mmX450mm such type of design will not obstruct the human movement between the sofa loop.
Also the variation in top surface material will give rise to interesting material themes that can be repeated elsewhere also. Some possible shapes of such an arrangement could be
* A big square using 4 small squares end tables of different top surface finish
* 2 small square tables with 2 half round tables at both ends to form a “capsule” shape in plan.
* Two rectangular end tables to for a “L” shape.
The variations can be unlimited if done creatively. But one thing remains to explore here, what happens to the “end” space where these end tables need to be placed primarily? Of course this space is a good one to place a attention grabbing feature such as a medium height plant or even designer lampposts. The advantage of using these is they will
evenly balance the visual focus away from the center tables and form a visual frame in the living room by providing good lighting at the same time.
Many more creative ideas are possible using simple tables in the living room. I hope you will find more new ways to use them in your home. I have tried to mark a few ones here
